The Wisconsin Forensics Coaches Association is “the WIAA of forensics.” They organize the Saturday tournaments that we will compete in most weeks. The categories listed on this website are in accordance with WFCA rules. The Wisconsin High School Forensics Association, founded in 1895, is the oldest public speaking organization of its kind in the country. WHSFA organizes its own tournaments separate from the WFCA tournaments usually on weeknights. The main difference between WHSFA and WFCA (other than the fact that that they have their own sets of rules for each category) is that WHSFA tournaments are not competitive. Students are judged individually on their own merits and not compared to other entries. The National Forensics League, founded in 1925 at Ripon College in Wisconsin, organizes an annual national tournament. Each year, every state has NFL qualifying tournaments. By winning the qualifying tournament you advance to the NFL national tournament. Most national invitational tournaments also play by NFL rules. NFL tournaments only use five of the WFCA forensics categories, so if you want to go to nationals you should pick your category wisely. The Catholic Forensics League organizes a national tournament attended by public and parochial students. They have a few categories and rules that are different from the NFL. You must qualify to go to the CFL national tournament. Attending CFL’s is a great honor, but not quite as prestigious as the NFL tournament. Wisconsin Forensics Daily is an independent, online forensics news source. It is an excellent place to visit for tournament information, results, photos and other good stuff.
